Elletaria cardamomum, also called green or true cardamom, is a herbaceous plant in the ginger family. It is the most common species of plant whose seeds are used to make the spice called, you guessed it, cardamom! The other main type is known as black cardamom, from the species Amomum subulatum. These types were first distinguished in the 4th Century BCE by Theophrastus, known as the Greek father of botany. Today, cardamom is used around the world for its unique flavor and aroma, with black cardamom having a coolness some liken to that of mint. Cardamom is used in many of our blends at Little Woods, such as Tuscan Dawn. Just search “cardamom” to see all the teas and culinary blends that feature this aromatic plant.
